The next few weeks look promising for the capture of this small game with delicious flesh.
Each autumn, after the phenomenon of the photoperiod which leads to a reduction in the number of hours of light, the coat of Jeannot Lapin moults.
This little animal puts on, at this moment, its white winter coat. It then becomes much easier to locate, as long as there is not too much snow. In fact, it completely rubs off into the decor.
Over the next few months, hares will be found in areas of regrowth, plantations, small conifers, brush, raspberry bushes, marshes, peat bogs, swamps, thickets, etc.
Physical traits
Endowed with large ears, this animal is capable of picking up all the threatening sounds as well as certain vibrations caused, among other things, by the tread of the steps of the nemrods.
Its elongated rear legs allow it not only to float on the snow, but also to reach top speeds of more than 45 km/h and to make leaps of three meters.
Although it feeds on buds, twigs, bark, roots, herbaceous plants and browses the tips of branches frankly in an axis of 45 degrees, this herbivore is not considered a rodent.
Rather, it is a lagomorph equipped with two pairs of incisors positioned in a row one behind the other.
The hare can measure from 35 to 50 cm and weigh up to 2.3 kg. As with many other species, females are usually larger than males. It has a life expectancy of 6 years.
Mainly active at night, it moves over an area ranging from 2 to 16 hectares. We can easily discover its presence thanks to the various networks of paths that it tramples on repeatedly and to the small brown and round droppings that it leaves everywhere.
By the way, don’t be surprised to see one of these animals, just like chickens, consuming its own excrement which is still rich in nutrients following too rapid digestion.
If you are alone, criss-cross the wooded area, walking slowly. Focus your vision more than five meters ahead of your position. This will make it easier for you to see the game scamper off.
Whenever you pass by a dense bush, a low cedar, an old stump, a pile of dead wood or a fallen tree, do not hesitate to give good kicking the chased animal out of a potential hiding place.
It will sometimes take more than one hit to scare him and make him run away. Take advantage of the slightly bare portions as well as those that are often described as dirty or really tangled.
In Group
Whether you are 2 to 8 hunters, form a straight imaginary line and advance by performing a beat. Keeping a distance of 4 to 6 meters, or even further if the wood is not dense, literally rake the area as explained in the previous paragraph.
A .410 caliber rifle or higher, a .22 rifle, an airgun with a velocity of over 500 feet per second, a black powder gun, a bow or crossbow all work very well for harvesting these small game.
