“Hard to say it’s a non-event”, says the president of the PRG

The People’s Primary “is a left-wing citizens’ initiative referendum which is wanted by the left. It is difficult for the supporters of this new mode of democracy to say that it is a non-event”, said Monday, January 24 on franceinfo Guillaume Lacroix, president of the Radical Left Party (PRG), while the popular Primary claims 467,000 people registered in the ballot which is to take place from January 27 to 30. The popular Primary must appoint the one who must bring together the left to hope to win the presidential election.

“There is a desire for citizens to express themselves” and say “that they still want to believe in a capacity of the left which can govern together”, notes Guillaume Lacroix. He sees it “left-wing citizens who want” to designate the one “who can give new hope”. If this popular Primary “is not perfect”, it stays “a democratic fact”, believes the president of the PRG. “It’s an event in itself” with “467,000 people who say, we are still going to register”, despite criticism. “Each and everyone at this time is sent back to their responsibilities”, launches Guillaume Lacroix to the address of the candidates.

The PRG boss also points out that Christiane Taubira is “the only one to play the game” and to say “who will accept the result”. He sees a “approach which is part of a logic of responsibility, of risk, but it is a process of unification. This is what makes its added value”. For Guillaume Lacroix, there is “need for a left that can govern, need for a left that can arouse hope, a left that does not unite for unity, but simply a left that is aware that, what what counts is the French women and men before the navel-gazing problems of our political parties.”

The People’s Primary “can trigger a real dynamic, an ability to push, to carry something new and which ultimately brings people together”, says the president of the PRG. “This is not a primary to force. This is not a primary to violate democracy.

“It’s a gathering of 467,000 people who want a left capable of governing together.”

“When we do politics, concludes Guillaume Lacroix, we still have to start by listening to the citizens.”
