We are still a long way from full employment for people with disabilities. It is however the slogan of this European Week for the employment of people with disabilities which is being held these days. But things are moving forward.
A study produced by Adecco Analytics, which scrutinized no less than 35 million job advertisements over a three-year period, proves that more and more reference is made to disability in these advertisements. There were 12% of so-called “handi-friendly” ads in 2018. That is to say that they included the terms disability, discrimination or diversity in their text. They are now 18%, or nearly one in five. A 50% increase in three years.
However, there are still major disparities because the study shows that recruitment professionals, such as employment agencies for example, write advertisements much more often than the companies themselves in which they say they are open to disabled candidates. There is a six-point difference in favor of recruiting professionals over companies that will ultimately hire candidates.
Over the past three years, it is the recruitment professionals who have made the most efforts in this area, who are therefore more sensitive to the question of the employment of people with disabilities. These are also the biggest companies – which have a human resources department – which are the most open: their announcements are twice as “handi-friendly” as those of the smallest structures.
Another notable difference is that this increase depends on the sector of activity: service activities, and in particular insurance, IT, engineering, financial services and support functions, make much more frequent than other references to disability in their job advertisements but, problem, these jobs are more often difficult than the others. This time it is the Ministry of Labor who says it: 44% of disabled employees report being exposed to physical constraints, against only 34% of all employees. The reason for this paradox? This would be because they more often occupy the least qualified positions, partly for lack of diplomas.
