Briton Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) will be penalized by five places on the starting grid of the Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday due to an engine change beyond the quota allowed per season, his team announced Friday.
This penalty will not apply at the start of the qualifying sprint race on Saturday, at the Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo.
The Brazilian GP is the third and last this season (after Great Britain in July and Italy in September) to offer a new format, with Saturday a qualifying sprint race whose results determine the starting grid on Sunday. The classic qualifications are advanced to Friday and fix the starting grid for this sprint race.
