(Hamburg) Hamburg police in Germany said on Sunday they had shot and wounded a man who threatened to attack members of the police with a pickaxe and a Molotov cocktail in the city, on the sidelines of a Euro match.
However, “there is no evidence that there is a link with soccer” and the match scheduled for the afternoon in the Hanseatic city between the Netherlands and Poland, specified to the AFP a spokesperson for the local police, Thilo Marxsen.
For a reason still unknown, “the attacker left a cafe and threatened the police,” he added. The police ended up shooting him and “injuring him in the leg,” the spokesperson said, indicating that the attacker had been hospitalized.
Hamburg is one of the cities where Euro soccer matches take place. The meeting between the Netherlands and Poland is scheduled for Sunday from 3 p.m. (9 a.m. Eastern time) and a large police presence has been deployed.
The attack took place near the very touristy Reeperbahn avenue, a little over a kilometer from the “Fan zone” installed by the authorities in a city park.
