LFI MP François Ruffin is swimming against the tide. Lhe deputy for the Somme declared that Hamas was “a fanatical, terrorist organization, which has always been the adversary of progressives in the Middle East”Tuesday October 10, in an interview published by The world. He believes that it is necessary to have “strong words” to denounce the “abominations” committed by Hamas in Israel, in the midst of a controversy over the position considered too ambiguous by rebellious France.

Since Saturday, La France insoumise has refused to qualify Hamas as an organization “terrorist”. The leader, Mathilde Panot, condemned Tuesday in the National Assembly “all war crimes”evoking both “civilians killed in Israel by acts of terror perpetrated by Hamas” And “civilians in Gaza who are killed by IDF bombs”, the Israeli army which launched its response. Comments which sparked a lively controversy within the left-wing Nupes alliance.
“No gazelle modesty”replied François Ruffin, when asked about this controversy. “What is well understood is clearly stated: on Saturday, Hamas committed abominations.” However, the one who is often seen as a potential candidate on the left for the 2027 presidential election also insisted on what, according to him, made “the breeding ground of Hamas”. “Having made Gaza an open-air prison, without hope for the youth, has fueled the worst”he estimated. “We must constantly set a ceasefire and peace as our objective”he said, deploring “an alignment with the United States” and calling France not to support in any way “blind” the Israeli government.
