Half-hearted holiday season for ski resorts

Weighed down by one of the least snowy Decembers in history, Quebec’s alpine ski resorts experienced a difficult holiday season, with some resorts welcoming half as many ski enthusiasts compared to the same period last year. .

According to a preliminary report from the Association of Quebec Ski Resorts, traffic recorded during the long holiday break should ultimately represent 12% of annual attendance. Normally, this key period accounts for 15 to 20% of overall seasonal traffic.

Nevertheless, the cold weather of the last days of December made it possible to restart the artificial snow systems in full force, which made it possible to increase the ski area and ensure good snow cover in many resorts.

With the natural snow which finally fell at the beginning of January in southern Quebec, we can expect more crowds at the chairlifts in January and February, two months which represent, year after year, 40% of the overall ridership of Quebec ski resorts.
