We talk a lot about Guy Lafleur’s not very brilliant excursion into politics in 1992. He made another excursion into politics, which we don’t talk about.
In 1997, the Ontario government of Conservative Mike Harris ordered the closure of the only French-language hospital in Eastern Ontario, Hôpital Montfort, in Ottawa. The hospital will be saved thanks to the mobilization of the Francophone community. This mobilization is supported by none other than Guy Lafleur. At a press conference, he is asked why he gets involved in politics. Lafleur replies: “It’s not a question of politics, it’s a question of law”. Bang! That response was equivalent to a 50-60 goal season. Thank you, Guy, for what you did for the community that day.
