Beyond the goals scored, the trophies won, everyone recognizes him, Guy Lafleur left his mark, his state funeral made him a “marker” for the Quebec nation! He was not only an accomplished athlete, but also, and above all, a man of heart, an accessible person, loved by all, an inspiring role model for several generations of Quebecers. Let’s share our period of collective mourning around a national funeral so that as many Quebec citizens as possible can see it one last time, whether at the Bell Center or by watching the ceremony held at the Basilica of Marie-Reine-du- World.
For three days, testimonies of simple supporters mixed with those of personalities who knew him will be broadcast on television networks or on a giant screen. The blond Demon on the ice was an angel in his personal relationships off the ice. His recipe, to make himself available while being accessible, listening to people through his exemplary know-how.
I thank his family for allowing the exhibition of his remains for more than 20 hours for the general public. This gesture reflects the authenticity of the larger-than-life man, like our hockey idols Maurice Richard and Jean Béliveau. Talent, perseverance, generosity and accessibility, these are the qualities and values that should inspire us in remembrance of this great athlete. Quebec commemorates his personal and professional life, an inspiration that will mark us forever, an authentic national pride. Our motto, “I remember” fits well with the personality of Guy Lafleur.
