Guy! Guy! Guy!: Cirque du Soleil pays tribute to Guy Lafleur in a new show (which lasts three periods) in Trois-Rivières

On April 22, 2022, the whole of Quebec mourned the death of Guy Lafleur. This provincial upheaval, however, would serve as a spark plug for the new show that Cirque du Soleil will present in Trois-Rivières this month. With Guy! Guy! Guy!we wanted to celebrate the legend that was Guy Lafleur in a show built like a hockey game.

Launched in 2015, the Tribute Series du Cirque du Soleil at the Cogeco Amphitheater in Trois-Rivières had until then celebrated only musical artists, such as Beau Dommage, Robert Charlebois and Les Cowboys Fringants. But for the years to come, both the Cirque and the Amphitheater wanted to pave the way for Quebec personalities from other fields.

The death of Guy Lafleur was “a shock for Quebec”, recognizes the vice-president and general manager of Cirque events and experiences, Marie-Josée Adam. More importantly, it demonstrated to Cirque how the Blond Demon was a natural fit for the new Summer 2023 tribute show.

“Guy Lafleur being the icon he is for Quebecers and how he marked everyone, it was an opportunity for us not to be missed,” said Ms.me Adam.

The third in a trilogy

“I don’t know if there is an athlete who has marked the history of Quebec as much as Guy Lafleur,” said creative director Daniel Ross. We see it a bit like the third in a trilogy. We had Maurice Richard, who was very much associated with our awakening in Quebec. After that, there was Jean Béliveau, who was a gentleman and proof that we could be ourselves and become strong. Afterwards, there was Guy, a guy from Thurso, a normal young man, who had a closeness with the Quebec people and who was a winner.
