Gunshots | Two dead in Brussels, the suspect on the run

(Brussels) Two people were killed by gunfire early Monday evening in Brussels, and the suspect is on the run, the prosecutor’s office in the Belgian capital told AFP.

A video claiming responsibility for the double murder, in which a man speaks in Arabic, was circulating Monday evening on social networks, according to a source close to the case.

A spokesperson for the Brussels public prosecutor’s office contacted by AFP simply clarified that an investigation had been opened, without being able to comment on the motive immediately.

The federal prosecutor’s office, in charge of terrorism cases, was carrying out checks on possible terrorist motivation.

According to a video posted on the website of the Flemish newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws, the shooter in a fluorescent orange jacket who was riding a scooter fled after using an automatic weapon, which he shouldered to fire at least four shots.

The events occurred near Place Sainctelette, in the northern districts of the Belgian capital.

Police were alerted shortly after 7 p.m. (1 p.m. Eastern Time).

A security perimeter has been installed.
