Gun Control | The Bloc wants an emergency meeting

(Ottawa) The Bloc Québécois is back on the attack to have experts heard on the banning of assault weapons. The Liberals tabled two controversial amendments to Bill C-21 that broaden the definition of a prohibited firearm and propose a list of models to be prohibited.

A first attempt by MP Kristina Michaud failed on Tuesday because the Conservatives refused to give their consent. She wanted to hear again from the experts who had testified during the study of the bill in parliamentary committee to obtain their opinion on the content of the amendments.

“We are a bit at an impasse, she notes in an interview. We have the impression that we are not progressing. »

She is asking for one or two days of consultation on the amendments, in particular to hear from the Association of Hunters and Fishermen of Quebec. SKS type rifles are part of the list of models that would be prohibited. This is a military style weapon, but popular with hunters.

The Bloc Québécois needs the support of four MPs who sit on the Standing Committee on Public Security and National Security to obtain an emergency meeting. Mme Michaud believes she could have the support of NDP MP Alistair McGregor and Liberal MPs.

More details to come.
