(Shippagan) Federal authorities say they are aware of the presence of an entangled right whale in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, about 48 nautical miles off the coast of New Brunswick.

The animal was last seen off Shippagan, in northeastern New Brunswick.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans says its response partners are on standby. “If the whale is found, and weather and sea conditions permit, efforts will be made to attempt to rescue it from the fishing gear in which it is entangled,” the statement said on Sunday afternoon.
The whale was observed on Saturday by a ministry plane.
Authorities add that the New England Aquarium linked the entangled whale to a year-old animal believed to be the 2021 right whale calf, known as 3720. They say they are unaware at this time. condition of the whale and how long it has been entangled.
