Guilty of sexual assault | Peter Nygard to be sentenced Friday

(Toronto) Former fashion mogul Peter Nygard, who was convicted of four counts of sexual assault last fall in Toronto, is scheduled to be sentenced Friday.

Nygard’s lawyer argued last week for a six-year sentence, citing the 83-year-old’s advanced age and multiple health issues. Prosecutors, meanwhile, have sought a 15-year prison sentence.

The defence and Crown have asked the court to give Nygard credit for each of the more than 1,000 days he has spent in custody so far. However, prosecutors have made it clear they want each day in custody to count as one, not 1.5.

Last November, Nygard was found guilty of four counts of sexual assault, but was found not guilty of a fifth count as well as one count of unlawful confinement.

The allegations against him date from the 1980s to the mid-2000s.

Nygard also faces charges in two other provinces, including Quebec, and is awaiting extradition to the United States.
