A breakthrough in sight in the quarrel between France and the United Kingdom? Guernsey granted, Wednesday, December 1, 40 fishing licenses to French boats, which will be able to continue fishing in its waters after February 1, 2022, announced the government of the Channel Island.

By adding three other ships that will replace ships that have left the French fleet, Guernsey will grant 43 licenses for 58 applications. They will be able to fish in the 6-12 nautical mile zone off the Channel Island, as was the case before Brexit.

This decision should not, however, resolve the dispute between France and the United Kingdom over fishing licenses. End of November, Paris still demanded more than 150 authorizations, according to the French Ministry of the Sea. London estimates for its part to have granted 98% of the requested licenses. The European Commission asked London on Wednesday November 24 to settle the post-Brexit dispute over fishing licenses with France by December 10, announced one of its spokespersons.
