Guadeloupe and especially Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy shaken by a 6.9 earthquake

It was 4:28 p.m. when Guadeloupeans, Saint Martinois and Saint-Barths were surprised by an earthquake. The first scientific findings report an earthquake of magnitude 6.9

It is a particularly strong earthquake (magnitude 6.9 ± 0.3) which was recorded on Monday July 10, 2023 at 4:28 p.m. and identified as Tectonic type.

The epicenter was located 277 km northeast of Saint-Barthélemy, 10 km deep (ie a hypocentral distance of about 277 km).

The Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Guadeloupe specifies that this earthquake could have generated, in the closest affected areas, an average ground acceleration of 3.6 mg, corresponding to a macroseismic intensity III (weakly felt).

Depending on the type of soil, the intensities may however have locally reached intensity IV−V (strong shaking).

In any case, it will have been impressive by its duration and its intensity, particularly for the inhabitants of Saint Barthélemy and Saint Martin.
