Leylah Annie Fernandez beat Emma Navarro 6-2, 6-3 and booked her ticket to the quarterfinals of the Guadalajara Open in Mexico on Wednesday.
Up to 2-2, the two players had a great battle in the first set. Fernandez, 74e world, however managed to save himself with this one thanks to two service breaks in a row.
The Quebecer won five games in a row, to lead 6-2, and 1-0 in the second set.
Fernandez broke Navarro’s serve again, 49e world racket, in the second round. She confirmed her break by bringing the score to 4-1, quickly closing to two games of victory.
Leading 5-3 in the set, Fernandez offered himself three match points at 40-0 and did not miss his chance.
She had two aces in the match, compared to one on Navarro’s side, who also made a double fault.
Fernandez had an impressive winning streak of 13 points in a row, winning a total of 59. She won 45% of her points on return of serve.
Fernandez will have a good challenge in the quarter-finals, facing American Sofia Kenin.
Kenin defeated tournament sixth seed Jelena Ostapenko 6-4, 7-5.
Despite his 53e position in the world rankings, Kenin has already reached fourth place. In 2020, she won the Australian Open, in addition to being a finalist at Roland Garros.
