As drought hits the country, farmers are adapting. Some are now turning to growing quinoa.
Faced with the drought that is spreading across the country at the start of August 2022, farmers are adapting. In the fields, new plantations are emerging like quinoa. This seed needs very little water to grow. Samuel Gourdien is technical referent for quinoa at the Pays de la Loire agricultural cooperative. According to him, “We are going to have a seed with a very nice color and also with a grain that is quite large. So this year is going to be a good year in terms of quality and quantity”.
In the territory, the cultivation of corn has given way to that of quinoa, with a main advantage in the face of global warming: “It’s a crop that requires less water. So it saves a little water”, explains a quinoa producer. By focusing on this crop rather than corn, the farmer saves up to one thousand cubic meters of water per hectare.
