Groundwater tables have been put to the test by drought this year. If they gradually recharge, will the torrential rains of recent weeks be enough?
Incessant rain and French people with their feet in the water. In recent weeks, the inhabitants of several departments, such as those of Pas-de-Calais, have the impression of living a day without end. Météo-France even speaks of an absolute record. Between October 18 and November 12, more than 215 mm of rain fell on average in France. Abundant precipitation, the water tables of which have greatly need. At 1er November, the level of 65% of them was below normal, including 18% at very low levels.
“The Mediterranean rim has absolutely not experienced this rain”
“It is especially the areas which have been very impacted by the floods which are seeing a recharge of the water tables. The rest of the territory has not been so impacted by this precipitation. The Mediterranean rim has absolutely not experienced this rain”, confides Emma Haziza, hydrologist. The Rhone basin and Île-de-France also have their water tables at very low levels. Only regular rains between now and April will bring them back up to standard.
