Shots were fired around 4:20 a.m. Saturday night towards the front of the Moretti pizzeria located in the Griffintown neighborhood.
The business was closed at the time, but an individual was inside. Informed by calls made to 911, several officers from the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) intervened.
“The police observed that the window of the business had been reached and shell casings were found on the ground, in the perimeter,” indicated the SPVM media relations officer, Caroline Chevrefils.
The man inside the scene was not injured, while the shooter(s) in this case fled. At this time, no arrests have been made.
“A perimeter has been erected to protect the scene where forensic identification technicians and investigators are working. Wellington Street was closed between Peel and Robert-Bourassa, but this has no impact on traffic,” continues the SPVM spokesperson.
This is the first time that shots have been fired at this establishment.
The Moretti pizzeria attracted media attention in the summer and early fall of 2020 because its managers refused to respect the health rules decreed by the Quebec government to fight against the spread of COVID-19. His alcohol licenses had even been suspended by the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux for 45 days.
More recently, the restaurant was reportedly involved in a position regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict in the Middle East. An opinion expressed on social networks and since deleted led to a public apology from the establishment. Evoking a form of piracy, the Moretti pizzeria indicated that it had “no political or religious opinion” and focused “around the loving passion for food”.
