Around 1,500 people marched through the streets of Bordeaux (Gironde) to protest, Sunday February 11, against the new drilling planned in La-Teste-de-Buch. Young Swedish activist Greta Thunberg joined the crowd. The demonstrators especially deplore the incompatibility of this project with the objectives of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. “With all the speeches we are being given today, including those from the government (…), I think it’s time to stop.”explains Philippe, member of the Scientists in Rebellion association.
A 2017 law provides for the cessation of hydrocarbon exploitation
Activists also mention a 2017 law, which provided for the upcoming cessation of hydrocarbon exploitation. “What is regrettable is that we are told that at the beginning, we find them audible and intelligent. We are told that in 2040, we must stop drilling. And there, in fact, we want to drill now”, deplores Thomas Brail, national head of the tree monitoring group.
