Greta Thunberg came to lend her support to opponents of the A69 construction site, in Tarn, on Saturday February 10. 350 people gathered according to the prefecture for the mobilization, which had been prohibited.
They are calling for the A69 motorway project to be stopped. Joined on the morning of Saturday February 10 by activist Greta Thunberg, the demonstrators denounce a useless project. “We are losing valuable resources here. And this will not only destroy nature and viable land, it will trap us in a toxic system of exploitation and pollution”declared the Swedish activist.
Tense exchanges with the police
Greta Thunberg’s trip delighted opponents of the project. “I thank her from the bottom of my heart, because she is internationally known, so it brings us a lot of visibility”, said one of them. From the start of the mobilization, exchanges with the police were tense. The prefect of TarnMichel Vilbois, banned the demonstration on public roads this weekend. “Like you said, [Greta Thunberg] participates in a gathering on private land. What I have banned are demonstrations on public roads.”, did he declare. The highway which is to connect Toulouse (Haute-Garonne) and Castres (Tarn) is contested for its ecological impact.
