Greenwashing | Competition Bureau moves forward with development of guidance

(Gatineau) The Competition Bureau says it will speed up the development of guidelines on the interpretation of the new provisions of the Competition Act aimed at greenwashing.

The federal watchdog says it has received a large number of requests and will develop guidance “on an expedited basis.”

Changes to the Competition Actwhich came into force last month, require companies to be able to substantiate environmental claims made to promote a product or commercial interest.

As part of its work, the regulator announces that it will launch a public consultation in the coming weeks.

Oil sands group Alliance New Pathways removed all content from its website and social media feeds last month, citing uncertainty over new anti-greenwashing rules.

The consortium of Canada’s six largest oil sands companies says the changes create significant uncertainty for Canadian companies looking to publicly report on the work they are doing to improve their environmental performance.
