(Ottawa) Green Party deputy leader Jonathan Pedneault announced his resignation Tuesday for personal reasons. He had shared leadership of the political party with Elizabeth May since 2022, even though the party’s constitution does not allow for the co-spokesperson model like Québec solidaire.
“The current conditions make my decision inevitable,” he said at a joint conference. He declined to elaborate on the reasons that led him to leave, but said it was not the fact that the party had not yet amended its constitution.
“I am disappointed to say the least,” reacted M.me May at a joint press conference. She highlighted his depth, courage and integrity.
The two had campaigned together in the leadership race that followed a tumultuous year under Annamie Paul, who ultimately resigned shortly after the last federal election.
The party had collected 2.3% of the vote in 2021, behind Maxime Bernier’s People’s Party of Canada which had obtained 5%.
They were hoping for a change in the party constitution to allow for a co-leadership which has been delayed a few times.
