Gray Cup hero Tyson Philpot extends to Montreal

Even more popular since he caught a decisive throw with 13 seconds left in the recent Gray Cup final, wide receiver Tyson Philpot will be applauded by Alouettes fans until 2025.

The Alouettes organization actually announced on Wednesday that it had added a year to Philpot’s contract. This is important news, especially since the 23-year-old athlete is from British Columbia and thus offers great flexibility regarding respecting the ratio of Canadian players.

“Tyson fully deserves this vote of confidence, he continues to improve and in his case, the best is yet to come,” commented Éric Deslauriers, executive director of football operations for the Alouettes, in a press release. He gained experience this year and even though he is only in his second year in the CFL, he has never been afraid to take on more responsibilities.

Happy combination

Philpot could continue to be a prime target for quarterback Cody Fajardo in the next two years, since the latter also obtained, last week, a contract extension until the end of the 2025 season with the Alouettes .

Remember that the winning touchdown, following a pass from Fajardo to Philpot, allowed the Alouettes to beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers by a score of 28 to 24 in the Gray Cup final. Montreal won the eighth title in its history at the same time. Philpot finished the same final with 63 yards on six catches, being voted the Canadian player of the game. Fajardo, for his part, received the title of most valuable player in this final.

In the regular season, Philpot played 13 games in 2023, collecting 532 yards and five touchdowns. As a rookie in 2022, he caught 39 passes for 459 yards, in addition to scoring two majors.
