The Canada Council for the Arts announced on Wednesday the eight artists who received a Governor General’s Award for Visual and Media Arts.
Montreal artist Louise Lemieux Bérubé, specializing in weaving, won the Saidye-Bronfman Prize. This award is described as the most prestigious in the field of arts and crafts.
The Canadian Museum of History will also acquire one or more works by the recipient.
The curator of the Remai Modern museum in Saskatoon, Michelle Jacques, received the Outstanding Contribution Award, given to a person or group “whose extraordinary achievements […] have had a real impact on the development of visual arts, media arts or fine crafts.”
Six artists won the Artistic Achievement Awards, including Quebec contemporary art artist Dominique Blain and Montrealer specialized in media art Don Ritter.
Also honored were Toronto artists Barbara Astman and Greg Staats, Shuvinai Ashoona of Nunavut, and Marjorie Beaucage of Duck Lake, Saskatchewan.
All recipients receive a $25,000 grant and the National Gallery of Canada will exhibit their works in 2024.
