Governing with your eyes closed | The duty

When I consult the news these days, I am doubtful: is the Legault government completely disconnected from the population? First of all, there is this craze for the battery sector, which gives rise to absurd decisions such as allowing the destruction of a natural site of which few remain in Montérégie. I was shocked to read that establishing this “green industry” on the land between McMasterville and Saint-Basile-le-Grand involved filling in 74 wetlands, 62 of which are of medium to high importance for conservation of biological diversity. Wetlands which, moreover, allow carbon sequestration, a key capacity in the fight against climate change. I was disturbed to discover that, to circumvent federal law prohibiting the destruction of the nests of migratory species, the company Northvolt waited until the end of the nesting season to destroy the habitat of hundreds of species of birds, including some threatened with extinction. Then, my confusion was met with disgust when I knew that the start of the work coincided with the turtles’ hibernation period; it turns out that by choosing this time, they will “simply” be buried alive. Is the government so blinded as not to realize that there is nothing green about the establishment of Northvolt on this land? If only he hadn’t changed the law “by chance” a few months before the announcement of Northvolt’s arrival. If the company had had to submit to the BAPE, perhaps our managers would have realized their blunder (see the sarcasm here).

Another decision that makes me question the blindness of our governments: the funding of 5 to 7 million granted to the Los Angeles Kings to come and play two games in Quebec. You don’t need glasses to realize that you have to be disconnected from the population, or too connected to your personal interests, to make such a decision. The staff of two main ministries, Health and Education, are in full pressure tactics. They try as best they can to hold on to crucial aspects of the balance of society, despite the desertion of thousands of their exhausted colleagues.

Mr. Legault, are you desperately trying to lose your next elections? Because by governing with your eyes closed, you risk hitting the wall.
