Gotham Awards | The Lost Daughter crowned best film

The feature film The Lost Daughter by Maggie Gyllenhaal last night won the award for Best Picture at the 31e edition of the Gotham Awards considered as the event that launches the long season of galas that will lead to the Oscars.

The film by the actress passed behind the camera and starring Olivia Colman is the big winner of this evening with four awards: best film, best screenplay, best emerging director and best performance in actor or actress at Mme Colman, tied with Frankie Faison in The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain.

Adaptation of the novel Stolen doll by Elena Ferrante, the film focuses on the journey of a woman who, after seeing her two daughters leave her to go live with their father, goes to Greece to take a beach vacation. This episode takes an unexpected turn when she is overcome by issues from her past.

Premiered at the Venice Film Festival, the film will be in theaters in Quebec on December 17 before being streamed on Netflix from December 31.

Among the other winners of the evening, we should mention that Drive My Car by the Japanese Ryusuke Hamaguchi who won the award for best international feature film. It was particularly preferred to Titanium by Julia Ducournau, Palme d’Or at the last Cannes Film Festival. Drive My Car was also in official competition in Cannes where he won the Screenplay Prize.

The animated feature film Flee by Jonas Poher Rasmussen won the award for best documentary. This work, which tells the story of Amin, a man to reveal his secret past on the eve of his wedding, will be in theaters in Quebec on December 17.

The film CODA, American version of the French success The Aries family, won two performance awards: Emilia Jones as an actress in a leading role and Troy Kotsur for the award for best supporting role.

Two actors, Ethan Hawke (The Good Lord Bird/ Showtime) and Thuso Mbedu (The Underground Railroad/ Amazon) are tied for best performance in a new series.

The South Korean series Squid Games broadcast on Netflix won the award for best new series.

The event which salutes the best of independent cinema, with a few categories reserved for television, took place at the Cipriani Wall Street reception hall in New York in the presence of numerous personalities.

As an aside to the presentation of the awards in 12 categories, tribute prizes were presented to several film and television artists including Kristen Stewart, Peter Dinklage, Jane Campion, and posthumously to the playwright and filmmaker Kathleen Collins who died in 1988 .
