Google Canada confirms nationwide layoffs

The ax finally fell at Google Canada, more than two weeks after the web giant announced that it would cut 12,000 jobs worldwide.

Company employees announced on social media that they had lost their jobs. Others took the floor to offer their support to colleagues who had been laid off or to announce that they were keeping their jobs. Employees spoke of a “dark day” for Google Canada.

Google confirms that the employees affected by the layoffs received the announcement on Monday. The company would not provide further details on the number of employees affected. Google assures that “Canada remains an important priority market for Google,” said a company spokesperson.

In January, Google announced that it would cut 12,000 jobs worldwide. The announcement from the parent company in California had created anxiety in the company’s offices in Montreal, Toronto, Kitchener and Edmonton. In a memo, the multinational had pointed out that announcing the layoffs would take longer in the company’s international offices.

The wait has been “enormous mourning” and a source of “sadness” for Franco Amalfi, strategic director of sustainability for the global public sector of Google Cloud, in Montreal. “I’m part of an amazing team led by one of the best managers, now I don’t know if I have a role at Google in the future,” he wrote on LinkedIn.
