A first in the world of European media. Google and Agence France-Presse (AFP) announced on Wednesday, November 18, the signing of an unprecedented European agreement on the remuneration of the content of the international press agency used by the search engine for five years, a decisive step after 18 months of negotiations.
The amount, lump sum, that AFP will receive under this agreement was not disclosed by AFP CEO Fabrice Fries and Google CEO in France Sébastien Missoffe, who jointly announced the news to journalists. from AFP. This is the first partnership concluded by a press agency under the European directive on rights related to copyright, a legislation adopted in March 2019 and transposed in France the same year, at the heart of multiple disputes between giants of the web and the media.
“It is an agreement which covers the whole of the European Union, in all AFP languages, including in countries which have not transposed the directive”, said AFP CEO Fabrice Fries, who described this agreement as “pioneer”. AFP produces and distributes multimedia content to its clients in six languages around the world.
“It is the culmination of a long fight” which began during negotiations on the European directive on neighboring rights, added Fabrice Fries. “We fought for the agencies to be fully eligible. The difference with a commercial partnership is that a neighboring rights contract is intended to be sustainable”, continued the CEO of AFP.
