Gold Cup | Panama advance to the final

(San Diego) Adalberto Carrasquilla scored the decisive penalty shootout as Panama stunned USA to reach the Concacaf Gold Cup final on Wednesday night.

Panama defeated the United States 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 tie. He will now have an appointment in the final with Mexico or Jamaica.

Ivan Anderson scored his first international goal in the ninth minute of extra time, but Jesus Ferreira tied the game for the Americans just six minutes later.

After beating Canada in a shootout in the quarter-finals on Sunday, the United States took part in a second session at the same Gold Cup tournament for the first time.

Cristian Roldan missed his attempt, allowing Carrasquilla to play hero for his country.

Panama reached the Gold Cup final for the third time in their history, having lost to the United States in 2005 and 2013.

The United States, seven-time champions of this tournament involving nations from North America, Central America and the Caribbean, failed to qualify for the final for the first time since 2015, when they had lost to Jamaica in the semi-finals.
