Right-wing politicians and media personalities in the United States are not letting up on the attacks on the GoFundMe crowdfunding website.
The platform became a target over the weekend for prominent Republican lawmakers and state governors after it froze more than $9 million in donations intended for ongoing protests in Ottawa.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Texas Senator Ted Cruz are among those who have attacked GoFundMe for initially saying it would redistribute leftover funds among charities chosen by protest organizers.
The company quickly changed course, however, promising automatic refunds to donors just hours after its initial announcement.
The right-wing media machine in the United States relentlessly attacks GoFundMe as it devotes excessive daily coverage to the Canadian protests.
Former Donald Trump White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany described the protesters as “our freedom fighters” in a segment that aired Monday on Fox News.
“These guys are real,” said Ms. McEnany, co-host of a Fox midday show called Outnumbered.
“They are standing up to their Orwellian dictatorial government with all these COVID executive orders, and good for them. And guess what […] they have the support of the people,” she argued.
