Québec solidaire (QS) unveiled on Tuesday a policy statement consistent with the concern expressed by co-spokesperson Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois for his political party to be more pragmatic and become a government party.
The Saguenay Declaration aims to reflect the interests of the regions of Quebec and to break down the prejudices that harm QS, explained Mr. Nadeau-Dubois during a press briefing at the National Assembly.
“I hope we don’t make a big deal out of the word “pragmatic”, it’s just a word,” he said. This is the word I used to describe the vision that is mine. The most important thing is what is behind that word, it is the essence of things. And basically, I can relate to this statement. »
The document puts forward proposals on the theme of ecological transition with the concern of “changing without feeling guilty”. It also addresses the issues of decentralization and land occupation through agriculture, natural resources, housing and the battery sector. QS also reaffirms its adherence to the interculturalist model, the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms and the independence project.
The declaration is an opportunity to deconstruct certain prejudices and lay the foundations of what Québec solidaire is called to become, indicated Mr. Nadeau-Dubois, a few days after questioning the QS program and launching a call for pragmatism following the resounding departure of his co-spokesperson, Émilise Lessard-Therrien.
“One of the perceptions that we often hear, and it is also often relayed in the media, is that to be concerned about the environment, to make the climate issue a priority, that would mean making people feel guilty, that would mean say lecturing the world for the choices they make every day, he said. This is not our project at Québec Solidaire, and the Saguenay Declaration is an opportunity to clarify this, it is an opportunity to deconstruct this prejudice. »
