Unifor announced Sunday that workers at the CAMI assembly plant and General Motors battery plant in southwestern Ontario have ratified a new collective agreement.
Unifor President Lana Payne says the new contract provides three years of wage increases over two years, with increases of 15 per cent for production workers and just over 20 per cent for skilled trades workers.
The union says the plant’s 5,600 workers will receive an immediate 10% raise, then a 2% raise in September 2025 and a 3% raise in July 2026.
According to Mme Payne said the deal aligns CAMI employees with the union’s bargaining schedule for the rest of the Detroit Three automakers, giving it greater bargaining power in future talks, which will take place simultaneously.
CAMI workers had given an overwhelming strike mandate, with 97% in favour of taking action if an agreement was not reached.
The Ingersoll, Ontario plant is the only one in Canada that manufactures electric vehicles on a large scale, namely the Chevrolet BrightDrop EV 600 and EV 400.
