GM of the Year is in Dallas for good

The Dallas Stars offered general manager Jim Nill a new two-year contract on Monday.

The man who received the title of GM of the last season in the National Hockey League (NHL) has been in post with the Texas club since the 2012-2013 season. The Stars went 403-280-98 under him and made the playoffs six times.

Nill is the longest-serving general manager with the same club after Doug Armstrong (St. Louis Blue), Jarmo Kekalainen (Columbus Blue Jackets) and Kevin Cheveldayoff (Winnipeg Jets).

“Jim has proven himself to be one of the best GMs in the NHL,” Stars owner Tom Gaglardi said in a statement. He meticulously built one of the best teams on the league by making trades, through the free agent market and with the draft. He assured us that the Stars will be Stanley Cup contenders for years to come.”

“My family and I are grateful to Tom Gaglardi for his commitment to the organization and for giving me all the resources available to build this team,” Nill said. I’m lucky to have an incredible team by my side who work tirelessly behind the scenes to help make our team what it is today. I’m excited to continue my work in developing a winning culture and achieving our shared goal of winning the Stanley Cup.”

Prior to joining the Stars, Nill worked as an assistant GM with the Detroit Red Wings for many years. He also played 524 games as a forward in the NHL, where he played for the Blues, Vancouver Canucks, Boston Bruins, Jets and Red Wings.
