Glyphosate, intensive farming, organic… Jean-Luc Mélenchon presents his plan for food in Bordeaux

He did not choose the Southwest by chance. Jean-Luc Mélenchon presented, on Monday January 24, his diet plan during a meeting at the Femina Theater in Bordeaux. Faced with a full room, La France insoumise claiming 3,000 people including those who could not enter, and after a brief introduction to the crowd outside, the presidential candidate unveiled several proposals for “change all agriculture”. In particular, he promises to ban glyphosate “the day after the installation of our popular unity government”. “We really have to stop with this”, claims Jean-Luc Mélenchon. “The farmers are not against this proposal, since they are the ones who suffer the most. And then we will hire people to remove the weeds!”

The presidential candidate also intends to put an end to intensive farming, and its living conditions “inadmissible”. “There have been four bird flu epidemics and we haven’t learned anything!”, thunders the rebellious candidate, while the government announced that more than a million poultry would again be slaughtered. “It is the ultra-concentrated farms that are the place where the virus is transferred to the animal. At the fourth general crisis, it is high time to say that such a system is absurd”, explains Jean-Luc Mélenchon. “The People’s Union Government will shut down factory farms!”

No “primary thing”

Among the other proposals of his food plan, the rebellious candidate affirms that he will change the name of the Ministry of Agriculture, to transform it into Ministry of Food Production. “When you say ‘Ministry of Agriculture’, you are just asking for agricultural production. We want food sovereignty”, he maintains, while specifying that he wishes to establish organic farming in “all the canteens of the country”. “The peasants are ready to do it but they will not be enough. Between 200,000 and 300,000 are missing, so they will have to be recruited”, he explains. Farmers that Jean-Luc Mélenchon intends to pay better, while freezing the prices of basic food products.

It’s almost the end of January, and it’s as if we had to justify our existence, when we’ve been campaigning for a year! It’s a farce that is not serious – Jean-Luc Mélenchon, presidential candidate

Between two proposals, the rebellious candidate also took pleasure in shoot red balls at the popular Primary, which exceeded this weekend, before its closing, 460,000 registrations. This movement still intends to submit the seven declared candidates on the left to an internal ballot. “70 days before the election, there is better to do than an obscure primary of I don’t know what!”, explained the candidate in front of the theater.

“Instead of whining, you would have done better to go and write a program! I am not concerned with this primary thing. It is almost the end of January, and it is as if we had to justify our existence, whereas “We’ve been campaigning for a year! It’s a farce that’s not serious”, denounces Jean-Luc Mélenchon, while ironically “the new season of Holland which is about to start”, while the former president announced that he would speak in the coming days.
