The national secretary of Europe Ecology-The Greens was the guest of “8:30 a.m. franceinfo”, Wednesday May 24, 2023.
Marine Tondelier, national secretary of Europe Ecology-The Greens, was the guest of the 8:30 am franceinfoWednesday May 24, 2023. Global warming, water use, reduction in the number of cattle in France… She answers questions from Marc Fauvelle and Salhia Brakhlia
Global warming: “We preached for a long time in the desert”
“We are living in a somewhat dizzying moment for those who have been supporting ecology for a long time”explains Marine Tondelier, “We preached for a long time in the desert. Today, the government comes to the same conclusions as us. But we are not reassured. In terms of ecology, there cannot be at the same time.” The national secretary of EELV believes that “even by making all the efforts one wants, the phenomenon [de réchauffement climatique] is already underway (…) We cannot guarantee children born in 2023 that the planet will still be habitable for their 30th birthday”.
Water management: “We must stop putting pressure on people, there is a big structural effort to be made in the country”
While water restrictions are underway in several French departments, affected by drought, Marine Tondelier gauges that it “We have to stop putting pressure on people. We are pointing to individual behavior, but there is a big structural effort to be made in the country”. Furthermore, says the national secretary of EELV, “ecological transition will only be possible and acceptable if it is fair”.
Electric cars: “The car is the industry of the past”
“The car is the industry of the past”insists Marine Tondelier, “it’s better if it’s electric than diesel, but we don’t ask about the weight of the vehicle, the carbon footprint during construction, recycling, etc.”
Law zero artificialization of the soil: “We will never do things by force”
“I understood that there was a real expectation from rural mayors who have very little room for manoeuvre” on the artificialization of the soil, explains Marine Tondelier. “We will never do things by force and by imposing the same thing from big cities to small villages”. The zero soil artificialization bill aims to halve the rate of new artificialization between 2021 and 2031 compared to the previous decade and to achieve a net artificialization of 0% by 2050. For the patron saint of environmentalists, “we must re-densify the cities, there is no shortage of wasteland and empty housing”.
Fewer cattle in France? “The amount of meat we eat in France is not good for the planet”
In a report published on Monday, the Court of Auditors recommends “a reduction strategy” the number of cattle in France, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “Everyone has understood that the amount of meat we eat per capita in France is not good for the planet, nor for your health”, says Marine Tondelier. She asserts that “environmentalists are not the enemies of agriculture” : “You have to be brave in politics. It’s not disliking agriculture to tell the truth. Intensive farming doesn’t even make farmers live properly.”
Army budget: “It questions a lot of people, including me, to increase this budget so much”
While the Minister for the Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu, defends the need for an envelope of 413 billion euros over seven years for the armies, “It questions a lot of people, including me, to increase this budget so much”explains Marine Tondelier, “if they increase there, they will fall elsewhere”. On the cost of nuclear deterrence, the national secretary of EELV considers that it is “of a real subject” but that we “cannot unilaterally phase out nuclear power”. Marine Tondelier, on the other hand, is in favor of the delivery of combat aircraft to Ukraine: “We are pacifists, but when the war takes place, we are not hypocrites and we choose our side. Of course we have to fight there for freedom.”
End of life law: “There is great hypocrisy in this country”
After the interview with the Minister Delegate for Health in the JDDin which she develops the outline of a future law on the end of life, Marine Tondelier says to herself “reassured by the fact that the citizens’ convention format works” and that we must continue to use them. “There is great hypocrisy in this country. We must take inspiration from the countries where it works, in Switzerland and Belgium (…) The inequality even goes as far as palliative care: 40% are in Ile-de-France. -France.”
According to the first tracks of the government, minors will be excluded from the possibility of assisted suicide or euthanasia: “If we consider that for adults, it is intolerable to suffer this suffering, then why not for children?”. The subject is “eminently more complicated” for kids, “but we can’t leave it on the side out of cowardice”. Marine Tondelier does not rule out bringing this question to the National Assembly: “I think it’s going to be part of the debates, legitimately.”
