Global warming of 4°C at the end of the century “is not inevitable”, says Greenpeace France

The government will launch a consultation on global warming on Tuesday with a scenario of a 4°C rise in temperatures in France in 2100.

A global warming of +4°C by the end of the century, in France, “it’s not a fatality”, says Jean-François Julliard, director general of Greenpeace France, Sunday May 21 on franceinfo. This hypothesis is now favored by the government, which will launch a consultation on Tuesday to define what scenario the country must prepare for in terms of global warming.

“We must also accelerate on what are called mitigation measures: how do we precisely avoid these +4°C at the end of the century”, also declares Jean-François Julliard. He recalls that“We still have a few years ahead of us to significantly reduce our greenhouse gas emissions as quickly as possible. This is the only solution that avoids these +4°C.”

You must not “resign yourself”

“Nor should everything we are going to do on adaptation” to global warming “leads us into a kind of resignation, where we say to ourselves ‘too bad, it’s like that, it’s going to happen and we don’t do anything until then'”, he presses. If we do so, “we will actually find ourselves reacting too late”. Preparing for the worst is not a bad thing, however, for him.

“Nobody says that’s what’s going to happen […] but it’s true that when we look at the different scenarios, it’s actually good to consider the most serious, because that’s also what will show to what extent, between now and the end of the century, France risks to change.”

“Our living conditions, our conditions of habitability, health issues, the question of the relationship to work, all these things which are the basis of our daily life will change considerably in a France at plus four degrees, that’s for sure”he points out.
