Global Pesticide Reduction Goal | “Optimise” rather than reduce, says the minister

Signatories to the Convention on Biological Diversity will continue to negotiate this weekend on the possibility of setting a global pesticide reduction target.

Two ambitious proposals are on the table: reduce the use of pesticides, by 2030, by at least half or reduce it by at least two thirds.

“I think that we have to do better, but we are not in the approach of reducing the quantities, but more in the approach of optimizing the use”, indicated the Minister of Federal Agriculture and Agrifood, Marie-Claude Bibeau, on the sidelines of her visit to COP15 on Friday.

“You have to use the right product, in the right place, at the right time, in the right quantity. […] And so the Canadian approach is more in risk analysis, but also in research and innovation,” she added.
