Tuesday, April 26, journalist Jean-Paul Chapel, present on the set of 20 Hours, shows how countries, faced with war and the terrorist threat, are arming themselves more and more.
Global military spending has almost doubled in 20 years. “We went from 1,100 billion to 2,100 billion dollars last year, a little less than 2,000 billion euros”, explains journalist Jean-Paul Chapel on the set of 20 Hours, Tuesday, April 26. Rising tensions between China and the United States have caused such spending to accelerate over the past five years. “In total, these expenses represent 2.2% of the world’s wealth. This includes purchases of equipment, but also military salaries and research”continues the journalist.
The United States is the country that spends the most, with a budget of 800 billion dollars. “They are followed by China, 293 billion and India, 77”, adds Jean-Paul Chapel. Behind them, the United Kingdom spends 68 billion dollars, Russia 66, and France 57. “Russia devotes more than 4% of its national wealth to military expenditure, almost twice the average”concludes the journalist.
