Global CO2 emissions increased by 1.1% in 2023. In order to contain global warming below 1.5°C, a global drop of 42% in emissions would be required by 2030.
Everywhere on the globe, the atmosphere is increasingly loaded with carbon dioxide (CO2). With a 1.1% increase in emissions in 2023, 36.8 billion tonnes of CO2 were released in one year. A global increase which hides big disparities. The United States issues, for example, 3% less CO2 this year. It is even a drop in 7.4% for the European Union.
The greenhouse effect is increasing over the years
But at the same time, in China, the world’s largest polluter, emissions are experiencing a rebound of 4%. A country which would not be the only one responsible for this bad figure. “A large portion of the goods and services that are manufactured and produced in China are not intended for the Chinese market, but are intended for export”says François Gemenneco-author of the 6th report of the IPCC.
The entire planet therefore still consumes too much fossil fuels. Result: year after year, the greenhouse effect increases and global warming worsens. To stay within1.5°C of warming, there would need to be a drastic global drop in 42% CO2 emissions by 2030.
