Global CO2 emissions close to preCOVID records, study finds

Global emissions of CO2, the main greenhouse gas, rebounded in 2021 to levels close to the records recorded before the COVID-19 pandemic, which had led to a dramatic drop, according to a study published Thursday on the occasion of the COP26.

Total emissions are expected to be 0.8% below their 2019 level, those from coal exceed their pre-seized level of 2019 (but below the absolute record of 2014) and those from gas reach their all-time high, according to this study by Global carbon project, a consortium of international scientists studying global carbon “budgets”.

Further details will follow.
