France Télévisions looks, Monday, March 7, on glaucoma. A silent and painless disease, from which one and a half million French people would suffer.

Glaucoma is a disease that can occur at any age, and from which one and a half million French people suffer. Problem: many don’t know. And for good reason, it is a silent and painless disease, hence the importance of screening. “It’s very disturbing because we have no symptoms, while there is an evolution“, confides Jean Hericourt, himself affected.

What does the healthy eye see? The children crossing near the red car, on the example given in the report. But for the sick eye, the people and objects on the right of the image taken as an example have disappeared. Glaucoma is the deterioration of the optic nerve in the eye. This is formed by 1.2 million fibers. Because of the tension in the eye, the disease destroys a large number of them. To limit the progression of this disease, which is irreversible, a laser operation is possible. If a person is not treated in time, however, they can become blind.
