MEPs will vote on Wednesday, November 22, on the 10% reduction in packaging in the European Union by 2035. In the North, a start-up offers to provide returnable bottles and then collect them from customers.

Could the deposit make a comeback? This is the bet of a company near Lille (North), which sells and delivers food products only in glass containers. Twice a month, Gaëtan Eckert supplies a customer with bottles of soda and sparkling water. The bill amounts to 10 to 20 cents per bottle for the deposit. But with each delivery, the customer recovers this money by returning those that have been emptied. “It costs the customer nothing, it is credited directly to their account. The deposit is directly refunded“, explains the delivery man.

Generalization within one to two years

Obvious for most customers, often nostalgic. The deposit has in fact long been part of the habits of the French, until its disappearance in the 70s and 80s, in favor of plastic. Today, a company based in Lille is trying to rehabilitate it. In two years, the start-up has expanded to around twenty cities, but initially there were only three. Within one to two years, the government has announced that it wants to generalize the deposit on glass containers.
