New twist for the Girondins de Bordeaux. While the Bordeaux club, six-time French champion, was due to appeal to the National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG) on Tuesday, July 23, it finally announced in a press release that it was withdrawing. It thus accepts “the sanction of administrative demotion within the National 1 championship for the 2024-2025 season”, in the absence of an agreement with the American group Fenway Sports Group for a purchase of the club.
“While discussions had resumed in recent days, representatives of FSG indicated yesterday, Monday July 22, to FC Girondins de Bordeaux and its shareholder [Gérard Lopez] their desire not to follow up despite assurances provided by various stakeholders”we can read in the club’s press release.
The DNCG, the financial watchdog of French football, announced on July 9 that the Girondins club would be demoted to National 1 (3rd division) due to a lack of financial guarantees. The Girondins management then appealed. However, the saga is not over. FC Girondins de Bordeaux will once again be summoned by the DNCG to present its budget and risks legal redress that could lead to a new demotion to National 2.
