Giorgia Meloni calls for a “merciless war” against smugglers

In a speech to the UN General Assembly, the head of the Italian government pointed the finger at the responsibility of “mafias” and assured that her country would help African countries to “develop and prosper”.

Giorgia Meloni wants to do “a merciless war” to smugglers. The Italian Prime Minister, at the head of a right-wing and far-right coalition, called for an ardent fight against those who organize the influx of migrants. She assured that her country was ready to lead efforts against “the slave traders of the third millennium”while the Italian island of Lampedusa saw the arrival of 10,000 migrants last week. “Can an organization like this that affirms in its founding document its faith in the dignity and worth of human beings turn its eyes away from this tragedy?”she said.

The head of government assured that her country wants to be at the forefront on this issue”. She pointed out the responsibility of “mafias” who earn as much from migrants as drug traffickers. The leader also assured that her country would also look into the roots of this phenomenon and help African countries to “to grow and prosper”. “Africa is not a poor continent. On the contrary, it is rich in strategic resources”she concluded.
