Gilles Courteau will step down as QMJHL commissioner after the 2024 season

Gilles Courteau will announce Friday morning that he is leaving his post as commissioner of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, probably after the 2024 season.

This was confirmed by the league in a press release on Thursday afternoon.

Courteau will take part in a press conference formalizing his decision on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Sheraton Hotel at the Montreal airport. He will be flanked for the occasion by the president of the assembly of members, Richard Létourneau, and his second vice-president, Bobby Smith.

Courteau, who is 65 years old, would have made this decision in order to be able to benefit from the retirement.

He became the league commissioner in 1986, succeeding Guy Morissette. During his reign, he notably increased the QMJHL from 10 to 18 teams.

According to the daily The sunthe names of Jocelyn Thibault, currently general manager of Hockey Quebec, Marc Denis, ex-hockey player and analyst at RDS, and Stéphane Quintal, the senior vice-president of the NHL player safety department, are circulating to succeed him.
