Ghislain Picard is elected for an 11th term at the head of the AFNQL

Ghislain Picard was elected for an 11th term as head of the Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador.

In an election on Tuesday, Mr. Picard garnered 74% of the vote, beating former Kanesatake Mohawk Grand Chief Serge Simon to win a new three-year term.

Mr. Picard was first elected regional chief in 1992.

Of 35 ballots cast by band council chiefs or their representatives, 26 went to Mr. Picard and nine to Mr. Simon.

The organization represents the 43 chiefs of the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador.

Mr. Picard is from the Innu community of Pessamit in the Côte-Nord region, about 50 kilometers southwest of Baie-Comeau.
