When the sad news of Ghislain Dufour’s death was announced, my memories jostled.
The little guy from Roberval of the 1970s that I was was already inspired by the adventures of this larger than life being. He defended his ideals on television, in newspapers or in cartoons with determination and formidable efficiency. Without my knowing it, the influence of this hero was already colliding with the DNA of my commitment.
Fifty years later, I watched this great builder of modern Quebec write the history of “industrial” relations while realizing even more clearly his immense contribution to society. On the central screen of the annual Gala of the Conseil du patronat du Québec (CPQ), his face marked by wisdom reminded us of the road traveled and certain collateral damage that led to relative industrial peace, social dialogue and an equal Quebec inspiring the world.
His colossal legacy goes well beyond labor relations. All the premiers of Quebec who crossed his path consulted him without delay before making a difficult decision or making an important change.
His impact transcended governments and sought neither recognition nor medals. While some may have feared his reactions, the vast majority opted for the contribution of a rare visionary capable of seeing the opportunities on the horizon of crises.
Unalterable authenticity
His stature as one of the greatest men of influence in Quebec today has never overshadowed his unalterable authenticity. Whether he was with people in power, the great artisans of Quebec Inc., his union partners or employees from all sectors, Mr. Dufour was always the same: a man who listened and was ready to debate with those who are capable of empathy to find a compromise without cultivating stupidity!
This committed citizen will have been at the forefront of several important socio-economic policies. But one of its most lasting contributions has been to mesh the financial and economic powers of Quebec Inc. to major trade unions. Witnesses to this goldsmith’s work will tell you that this was his life’s work.
The Conseil du patronat and Ghislain Dufour have been inseparable since its foundation and will remain so for the future. Its values, convictions and social dialogue now make it possible to face the perils of our time. The Manichean vision of the world of work withers largely thanks to him.
The best way to honor his memory is to invite all stakeholders in search of a common path for all and leading to prosperity for all.
When I was with him, the little guy from Roberval was always facing this hero of my childhood. During one of our last meetings, Mr. Dufour confided to me his optimistic vision for the future. His last words to me were full of gratitude and confidence. Overwhelming gratitude for his traveling companions, and confidence in all the committed citizens who have taken up his torch.
I offer my deepest condolences to his family, friends, loved ones and all his fellow travellers. He is one of those people who change the world. It will have changed mine and marked my life forever.
