GHG reduction | Liberals adopt “up to 45%” target

(Quebec) The Liberals adopt a greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction target “of up to 45%” from 1990 levels by 2030. This is more ambitious than the government’s current target Legault set at 37.5% reduction.

Liberal members meeting in convention in Quebec voted 87% in favor of raising Quebec’s green target. The initial proposal aimed to provide Quebec with “floor targets permanently linked to the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) currently targeting carbon neutrality in 2050 while pursuing even more ambitious targets”, without specify the value.

It is an amendment proposed by the members of the youth committee of the political formation which was adopted on Saturday. President Gabriel Ahmad said he wanted to draw inspiration from the remarks made the day before by chef Dominique Anglade to set more ambitious targets to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050.

This is more than the Legault government’s target, but less than that set by Québec solidaire. Meeting in congress last week, the solidarity activists adopted the proposal to “reduce Quebec’s emissions by at least 55% compared to the 1990 level by 2030, by getting as close as possible to the target of 65% “. A target that members of the liberal parliamentary wing consider “unrealistic”.

Seeking to redefine themselves by taking a green turn and more to the left, the Liberals want to identify themselves as a more “progressive” party, but reject any rapprochement with the Quebec solidaire proposals. “We are not a pale copy of anyone,” argued Mme Anglade on Friday when he arrived at the congress. Quebec solidaire is an opponent with “fairly radical ideas,” she criticized.
